Program Description:
Antwerp, BelgiumUniversiteit Antwerpen
(Antwerp, Belgium)

Antwerp is a charming city boasting many excellent museums and historical monuments, as well as a fast-paced nightlife, fine shopping districts, and a booming commercial center. Visitors are surrounded by magnificent museums, buildings, and monuments.

Foreign students will appreciate the city's central location in Europe. Brussels, Belgium's capital, now commonly called 'the Capital of Europe,' is only a thirty-minute train ride away. From Antwerp one can quickly and easily reach Amsterdam (2 hrs.), Luxembourg (3 hrs.), Paris (2 hrs.), and London (3 1/2 hrs. by train, 45 min. by plane).

Antwerp is situated in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. Its port of world importance extends north of the city up to the Dutch border. The diamond, chemical, and telecommunication industries have made the Antwerp area the industrial and economic center of Belgium. Antwerp also showcases numerous historical buildings and splendid museums that depict Antwerp’s golden era of the 16th and 17th centuries.

In 1993, Antwerp was considered the cultural capital of Europe. Antwerp is a city of about half a million inhabitants, serving a surrounding region inhabited by one million people, with about 60,000 students in all kinds of higher education. It has a very diversified offer of social and cultural events. The entertainment market in Antwerp is impressive. Famous Antwerp and Belgium beer specialties are much appreciated!

University education in Antwerp started in 1965. The Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen (UIA) was created by law in 1971. A university in Antwerp was considered one of the important measures of government policy at the time. New institutions should promote the democratization of higher education, avoid overcrowding of existing faculties, and promote educational innovations in academia.

Academic System and Language Requirements
The language of instruction in Flanders is Dutch. A basic knowledge of the Dutch language is required. However, in the linguistics and literature departments courses are taught in the target language.
