Program Description:








 Visiting the sustainable urban forests surrounding Nurnberg and tours along the Historic Romantic Road of western Bavaria


June 20, 2019- July 1, 2019


Thursday, June 20: Depart Chicago O'Hare Airport 10pm Lufthansa Flt 433
Friday, June 21: Arrive Frankfort Airport 2 pm, take railway to Wurzburg, check into hostel, evening group meal
Saturday, June 22: Visit urban forestry park amid historic town of Wurzburg and environs
Sunday, June 23: Hike along Frankenhohe trail to Frankenhohe Nature Park
Monday, June 24: Visit picturesque and famous medieval town of Rothenberg on the Tauber river
Tuesday, June 25: Visit historic Folk Museum outside Bad Windsheim
Wednesday, June 26: Rail trip to Nurnberg, check into hostel
Thursday, June 27: Tour urban forests with local planner to understand integration of residences, recreation and urban watershed management
Friday, June 28: Tour old 3rd Reich museums and urban parks
Saturday, June 29: Scenic hike with castles and explore prehistoric museum in the Hersbruck “Switzerland”
Sunday, June 30: Travel to Munich area, down day for shopping, local exploration 
Monday, July 1: Depart Munich 0930 am Lufthansa Flt 436, return to Chicago, mid afternoon

Educational Objectives

  • Visit and learn in a landscape shaped by the forces of ice, water, and human history
  • Understand the common management issues of some of its most historic and intensively planned and used urban Forests
  • Gain a healthy respect for the long history and management of forested landscapes in Europe, particularly northwestern Bavaria, known as Franconia.

Program Charge and Payment Plan

Summer 2019 program charge is $2,550 Plus Airfare $959.73 (Airfare payable directly to B&A Travel directions are below)

This program charge of $2,550 includes the following:

  • ​In country travel costs

  • Guide and entrance fees

  • Lodging

  • Most breakfasts and lunches

  • 2 group dinners

Other Costs

  • The Program Charge does not include SIU tuition.  Students are required to register for 3 credit hours.  Tuition at SIU is approximately $315 per credit hour for undergraduate students, and $460 for graduate students. The tuition rate is charged at the in-state rate for students coming from universities other than SIU.  You can find your exact cost here.

  • Personal expenses are also additional to the program charge.

Payment Plan 

  • Installment 1 - $150 non-refundable deposit is due upon application and payable by check or money order to SIUC at the Study Abroad Office located in Woody Hall.  (This $150 is included in the Program Charge)

  • Installment 2 - $1,000 is due by March 1, 2019 or with application and payable by check or money order to SIUC at the Study Abroad Office located in Woody Hall. 

  • Installment 3 - Balance of $1,400 is due by April 1, 2019  and payable by check or money order to SIUC at the Study Abroad Office located in Woody Hall.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for SIU Carbondale students and may also be available for non-SIU students through their home university. Financial aid requires full-time registration and other conditions. You should consult with the Financial Aid Office to get an estimate of what you might have available. Programs that take place after the end of the Fall Semester are considered as Spring Semester Programs. Programs that take place after the end of the Spring Semester are considered Summer Semester Programs.

Study abroad has scholarships that are available for SIU undergraduate students.  You can apply for those here “Salukis Abroad Scholarship”.

Airfare to Germany is not included in the program charge.

Airfare is arranged through B & A Travel Service.  A non-refundable $120 deposit is due by 3/1/2019.  You will also need to submit a copy of your passport at this time.  Final payment of $839.73 must be made by 5/1/2019.  B & A Travel Service is able to accept check, credit card or money order.  Please call B & A Travel Service at 549-7347 from 9am to 5pm weekdays or you may drop by their office to make the payment.  It is located at 701 South University Ave, Carbondale, IL 62901.

Cancellation Policy

The following cancellation policies apply to all programs with the exceptions noted:
90+ Days before departure - $50 application charge plus any non-refundable charges
60+ Days before departure - $100 plus any non-refundable charges
30+ Days before departure - $$150 plus any non-refundable charges
Up to day of departure - $200 plus any non-refundable charges
After departure – No Refunds


Withdraw Policy

Please contact Study Abroad Programs immediately if you are unable to participate in the program.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to notify Study Abroad Programs as well as the instructor about withdrawing.  This must be done in writing (e-mail is acceptable) as well as logging in to “MyStudyAbroad” and withdrawing yourself under the “Status” tab.  You will be considered as a continuing participant until you notify us.  If you need to withdraw, it is in your best interest to withdraw as soon as possible and to verify that we have received your written notice. 

Application Deadline and Procedure

The priority application deadline is November 1 for the January program and March 31 for the May program although earlier application is advised.  We cannot guarantee that space will still be available by this time.  If applying after the priority deadlines you will need to pay installment 2 of $1,000 at the time of application.

  • There is a $150 deposit payment due upon submitting the application. The $150 is included in the total program charge.

  • Refund of deposits will be subject to the cancellation policy stated above. The instructor will coordinate any refunds.
