Program Description:

Natural Resources of Ireland



Visiting counties Dublin, Wicklow, Tipperary, Kerry, Clare, Galway, Longford

  • F15 June- Drive from Carbondale to Chicago, Best Western Glenview Hotel

  • S16 June -Depart Chicago S17 June –Arrive Dublin Airport 0735, Newgrange Neolithic tumulus (center photo, above); Stay at Glendalough Hostel

  • M18 June -Tour Glendalough NP, Kilmacurragh Botanical Gardens, Bray beachwalk

  • T19 June - Drive into Dublin museums in am, afternoon roaming, evening return

  • W20 June - Leave for Killarney, stop @ Cahir Castle in Co. Tipperary; Stay at Killarney Hostel

  • T21 June - Down Day in Killarney, afternoon sightseeing, evening of local music

  • F22 June – Dingle Peninsula Tour, Blasket Island Centre, Early Christian Churches evening of local music in Dingle

  • S23 June -Ring of Kerry Tour, Ballinskelligs Bay, Iron-age Staigue Fort

  • S24 June - Intro to KNP, hike in Glashin na Marbh to ancient settlements

  • M25 June - Ross Castle tour, Lakes of Killarney boat cruise to Upper Lake, hike back to town thru old-growth oak forests

  • T26 June – Leave for Galway, drive thru Burren; Stay in Galway House

  • W27 June – Day in Connemara NP, Clifden and Coastal Galway w Archaeologist

  • T28 June – National Museum of Country Life, Co. Mayo

  • F29 June – Day in the Burren visiting Cliffs of Moher, celtic ringforts

  • S30 June – Visit to rural ecovillage, east Galway•S1 July – Down day in Galway shopping, medieval architecture walk

  • M2 July – Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Limerick; Rowan Tree Hostel, Ennis

  • T3 July- Leave from Shannon Airport

Educational Objectives

1) Visit a landscape shaped by the forces of fire, ice, water, and human history;
2) Understand the common management and conservation biology issues of some of its premier National Parks and Ecosystems;
3) Gain a healthy respect for the Irish national character through interaction with local landowners, managers and musicians.

Installment 1 - $150 Non-refundable deposit is due with application
Installment 2 - $1,000 Due March 1, 2018
Installment 3 - $Balance of Program Charge Due April 1, 2018
Installments must be made by check or money order made payable to SIUC at the Study Abroad Office located in Woody Hall.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available for SIU Carbondale students and requires full-time registration and other conditions.  You should consult with the Financial Aid Office to get an estimate of what you might have available.  Programs that take place after the end of the Fall Semester/commencement are considered as Spring Semester Programs.  Programs that take place after the end of the Spring Semester/commencement are considered Fall Semester Programs.

Study abroad has scholarships that are available for SIU undergraduate students.  You can apply for those here “Salukis Abroad Scholarship”.




Application Deadline and Procedure

Applications are due by March 1, although earlier application is advised. We cannot guarantee that spaces will still be available by this time.

To apply, simply click on the Apply Now button in the top section of the program information. A $150 deposit is due upon application, $50 of which is not refundable. This $150 is included in the program charge. The deposit will need to be paid by check or money order at the Study Abroad Office in Woody Hall once you have submitted your application online.

Cancellation Policy

The following cancellation policies apply to all programs with the exceptions noted:
90+ Days before departure - $50 application charge plus any non-refundable charges
60+ Days before departure - $100 plus any non-refundable charges
30+ Days before departure - $150 plus any non-refundable charges
Up to day of departure - $200 plus any non-refundable charges
After departure – No Refunds

Specific programs may have a different cancellation timetable which overrides the standard policy.

Programs, whether SIU Global Seminars or affiliated study abroad providers, may require an additional non-refundable payment. That should be listed in their program information and is considered as part of the non-refundable charges. Other non-refundable items include (but are not restricted to) such items as airline tickets, hotel deposits and similar items. Generally speaking, we can only refund what we can recover. All program rate are subject to change based on unavoidable cost changes.

Withdraw Policy

Please contact us immediately if you are unable to participate in a program. It is the applicant's responsibility to notify Study Abroad Programs and the instructor about withdrawals. This must be done in writing--e-mail is acceptable--as well as withdrawing through MyStudyAbroad. You will be considered as a continuing participant until you notify us. If you need to withdraw, it is in your best interests to withdraw as soon as possible and to verify that we have received your written notice.
